My work tends toward the dry and analytical with an occasional touch of wit. I like the idea that art-like objects can almost be made out of a vacuum. I am interested in systems I invent, schemes of ephemeral color, color reduced to white, as well as carved figures and abstractions. What I consider art leads to what is invisible, ever receding, to what shimmers between an object and a thoughtful perception. For me the emotional side of art is in the tension of not knowing if the object will be successful.
I carve limestone, mulberry, oak, and walnut and many of the colored wall sculptures are carvings with oil and wax applied to them. The rod structures began as models for large outdoor work that took on a life of their own. The paintings are wax and oil on oak veneer.

Hi Mike. My name is Stephan Roll. Am rehabbing 126 Front St to make art gallery in Dowagiac. Someone taped your show card on my door today. Don’t know if that was you but we should talk anyway. Hope to hear from you and will check your show out in South Bend. Thanks
Mike

Hey Mike,
A few keywords to jog your memory: Bethune Street in Detroit. A few key people from days long gone by: Louis Opalka, Linda Fink, Jeradine Simpkins, Paul Browning and…me, Bill Echlin.
Linda and I have been married 48 years now and live in Traverse City. Doing well given our advanced age 🙂 I had a career in newspaper reporting and editing and Linda was a special ed administrator. We have a daughter, 42, and two very spoiled basset hounds. Hope this finds you well and happy.
Power to the people!
Bill
